  • Liners: Anodized 6AL4V Titanium
  • Handle: Polished New Zealand Jade (Pounamu) Gemstone
  • Case: Black Galaxy Granite gemstone, suede leather, neoprene feet
  • Knife: This beautiful collector's knife was custom made for a very special client who supplied the very rare and highly valued gemstone for the handle. The knife is my "Aries" pattern, a folding liner lock knife with beautiful details. The blade, spine, and bolsters are made of carved and hollow ground damascus pattern welded stainless steel, in tough and wear-resistant AEB-L martensitic stainless tool steel married with 304 austenitic stainless steel in a twist pattern. The blade is hollow ground and the blade and spacer (handle spine) are hand-carved in a rope filework pattern for deep texture. The spacer terminates in a nice carved tail lanyard hole at the butt of the handle, and all damascus surfaces are etched for a clear rendering of the intricate pattern. The inside of the spacer frame is also fileworked and etched completely. Even the spine-mounted thumb-opener is intricately fileworked and etched in damascus stainless steel. All mechanical fasteners on the knife are 304 stainless steel. The liners are 6AL4V titanium and are fully fileworked with a tiny, accurate vine pattern, and then fully anodized to a deep cobalt blue color for a hint of visual contrast. The bolsters are dovetailed and bed a pair of rare gemstone handle scales. This is Pounamu, the New Zealand greenstone, a nephrite jade that is tough and beautiful, with deep green character and some translucency. This is some of the hardest jade to acquire, as all exports of this stone are tightly controlled. My client was able to furnish me enough for this project to honor his love for New Zealand. The knife is light and comfortable in the hand with smooth and tight action.
  • Case: A knife of this jewelry quality needed a special place to rest, a sarcophagus both unique and striking. I hand-carved, shaped, lapped, and polished this case of Black Galaxy Granite from India. This is gabbric anthorsite, and is a hard, tough, and very durable granite. It has inclusions of bronzite (enstatine) which create a coppery spangled reflection in the light which varies depending on the angle and light. This is a beautiful granite, with no veining and a uniform finish, lapped and polished throughout, even on the inside surfaces. The inside is carved to accept the knife, and is lined with green suede leather for protection of the knife. The lid has keyed holes which engage 304 stainless steel buttons for a snug fit. I inlayed neoprene feet in the bottom so the case can safely rest on any surface without scratching.
  • A refined, elegant, and striking unique knife.

Thanks, K. D.!
