Sheath: Hand-carved leather shoulder inlaid
with Ostrich Leg Skin
Knife: This beautiful Cygnus-Horrocks custom
knife has a handsome dark look. The blade is mirror-polished and
accurately ground in 440C high chromium martensitic stainless tool
steel for the highest corrosion resistance of any tool steel coupled
with great wear resistance and high hardness. The blade is deeply hollow
ground, matched from side to side with impressive lines, crisp and clean.
The knife spine has a two-thirds length top swage to reduce point
profile, and the spine is a very thick and strong .269" (6.8
mm). The
spine is deeply fileworked with a punchy arrow pattern, throughout
the tapered tang all around the handle to the front bolster quillon.
The knife is bolstered with zero-care high nickel, high chromium
304 austenitic stainless steel bolsters, which are full and sculpted,
contoured, and polished for a smooth and comfortable grip. The
dovetailed bolsters bed a pair of Australian Tiger Iron gemstone
handle scales, in deep, rich red Jasper, dark gray hematite, and a few
highlights of tiger eye quartz. I carefully sliced this gem to reveal a wavy
pattern, which looks like flowing lava in metallic stone. The
gemstone is tough and hard and smooth and inviting, and the knife
balances right at the forefinger location in a forward grip style. The
rear bolster has a 5/16" chamfered lanyard hole for extra security,
and the blade is honed to a razor-keen edge.
Sheath: Commensurate with the knife, the sheath
had to display the same masculine quality, so I made it in 9-10 oz. heavy leather shoulder,
hand-carved and dyed medium brown, hand-stitched throughout with
polyester sinew. The sheath has 14 inlays of black Ostrich Leg
skin and even the double-row stitched belt loop
has exotic skin inlays. The sheath is lacquered and sealed
throughout, and holds the knife deeply enough to protect the blade
and the wearer, yet offers easy extraction with the hawk's bill rear
quillon.
A great, handsome, and substantial knife in striking materials.
