Knife: Eridanus is named for the constellation, an ancient
Greek river in the sky of stars. The nice lines of this knife flow well; it is
one of my more graceful patterns. The blade shape is well suited to
a variety of tasks asked of a knife, whether boning or utility,
chef's prep or collection: Eridanus suits them all. The blade is
long and narrow, but I made this one in substantially thick stock,
with a good length of spine to support the razor sharp hollow ground
and mirror finished blade. I chose a simple and accurate filework,
regimented but not too overbearing fully along the tapered tang,
handle, and blade. The bolsters are 304 austenitic stainless steel,
for great toughness, wear resistance, and the highest corrosion
resistance of any bolster material. I engraved a pattern that
reflects the swirls and growth of the cosmos, in deep relief with a
bright surface finish. The front bolster has a sculpted polished face, and both
bolsters are dovetailed to bed a pair of striking Plasma Agate
gemstone handle scales. This agate comes from an area around the ghost town of New Idria in central California and is striking in whites, cream, tans,
browns, and a variety of greens with splendid patterns and scenes
within the stone. It reminds me of the birthplace of stars, and you
can see all sorts of images deep within the stone. It is a hard, tough, and durable agate that keeps a bright
glassy polish. The knife feels cool, smooth, and comfortable in the
hand.
Sheath: The sheath for this fine knife has a
distinct matching character, with full panel inlays of Elephant skin in rich
tan that closely match the colors in the gemstone handle. The panels
are inlaid the face, the back, and the belt loop, and the sheath body is
made of 9 - 10 oz. leather shoulder, dyed a deeper tan color,
hand-stitched with polyester sinew in an alternating length stitch
pattern,
lacquered and sealed. The sheath is deep and protective for the
knife and owner.
