- Handle: Blue and Black G10 Fiberglass/Epoxy Composite
- Type/Purpose/Origin:
The name "Kairos" is an ancient Greek word meaning
the right or opportune moment (the 'supreme moment'), that
one instant in time where everything comes together and the strike must
happen. Think of when the archer must release his bowstring, when the
sniper must pull the trigger, when the advancing unit must make
their decisive move. This is a move that cannot be turned back from,
it must happen at just the right instant. This is my inspiration for
the Kairos.
This is one of my most popular knives made for counterterrorism, combat,
rescue, emergency response, hazardous disaster response, and
survival. This is a super keen and sharp, curved blade, originally
adapted from my popular "Hooded Warrior" sniper's knife, which
was designed with professional input from military clients during
Operation Iraqi Freedom.
- Blade Steel Alloy: The Kairos
blade is a proven hypereutectoid, high alloy martensitic
stainless tool steel, 440C. This is my most
requested steel for a reason. When properly treated, it's a
dependable, reliable workhorse of extremely high corrosion
resistance, good toughness and high wear resistance. The extremely
high chromium of 440C along with the high carbon and moderate
molybdenum results in profuse chromium carbides, increasing
corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance. There is a reason
that 440C is the steel that all other stainless tool steels are
compared to. This steel is suitable for marine saltwater use.
- Heat Treatment: This Kairos has my
T3 heat treatment, yielding an astounding blade in incredible
condition through advanced processing protocols. How advanced is
this treatment? It's a multi-stage cryogenic treatment,
involving temperatures ranging in over 2000°F (1090°C)
to -320°F (-196°C). The process is an evolution of my
advanced heat treating processes, and consists of 33 dedicated
and specific steps and takes 172 hours. This means that just to
heat treat this blade takes over a week. The reason for this is
scientific and critical, but yields the most stable, most
wear-resistant, most durable and long-lived structure of this
steel, profuse with fine multi-element carbides and a uniform
and unbelievably robust structure. This is a testament to my
determination to make the very best knives, steels, treatments
and kits in the modern world. I know of no one else who has
advanced the treatment to this level; it's unheard of in the
metals and knifemaking field.

- Blade Design and Geometry: The blade of the
Kairos has a wide array of uses, with the curved blade and thin,
keen point with substantial width, making it extremely strong
overall. It's accurately hollow ground and well-matched side to
side, and the single-bevel cutting edge is razor-keen. The hollow
grind will allow generations of sharpening while steel offering a
thin cutting edge, and the top swage on the spine reduces the
cross-sectional thickness of the point without sacrificing strength.
At over 1/4" thick, the spine of the knife is heavy and thick, making this a very strong
knife. In this particular knife, I chose not to add serrations, so
that extra cutting edge length would be available, and the knife
would have great crossover potential, allowing sport, hunting,
skinning, and utility work.
- This is an extreme use
crossover knife design, made of tremendously corrosion-resistant and
tough high chromium stainless steel.
-
Blade Finish: The blade and bolsters (and all
of the accessories) are in my "Shadow" line of
counterterrorism and tactical knife finishes. Answering
the request for completely subdued and non-reflective
surfaces, I developed the Shadow Line with my Ghost
Slate finish. This means darkening in a permanent
fashion not only the stainless steel of the knife,
blade, handle, and fittings, but all of the gear in the
entire kit: the fasteners, the sheath parts, aluminum
mounts, accessories and entire package. Read more about
my Shadow Line and Ghost Slate finish on my
Counterterrorism Knives page
at this bookmark.
- Bolsters: I bolstered the
Kairos with my
signature zero-care, high nickel, high chromium 304 austenitic stainless steel bolsters,
contoured and rounded for comfort of the hands, and shaped and
radiused in the front face for easy cleaning. They are attached
with multiple through-tang pins of 304 stainless steel, and
the mounting is permanent, as well as extremely corrosion-resistant. This is the
same steel used for stainless steel nuts, bolts, and fasteners,
and the bolsters are heavy, thick, and solid, giving great
balance to the knife. The front bolster is contoured
around a 1.2" (3.0 cm) round forward finger ring,
which is smoothed and radiused for comfort and is large enough
for the gloved finger. The finger ring offers maximum security
between the hand and the knife, essential in the most
critical of counter-terrorism and combat tactical
offensives, as well as use in hunting and utility chores. The
front bolster extends forward of the finger ring, offering a wide
thickness for the thumb to rest on the knife spine and filling the
grip between the thumb and forefinger. The rear bolster has a large chamfered
5/16" (8 mm) through-tang lanyard hole for added
security when working elevated or over water or in a
debris field. The bolsters are dovetailed to create a
solid, seamless union with the handle material. The bolsters are treated in my "Ghost Slate"
shadow line for reduced glare and match the rest of the knife
and gear.
- Handle: The
handle scales are blue and black G10, a fiberglass reinforced
epoxy composite that is one of the most durable and dependable
manmade handle materials on earth. The handle scales are dovetailed
and locked and bedded under the bolsters, secured with two heavy 304
stainless steel pins. The handle shape is comfortable and extremely
secure, with deep quillons, good belly, and slope for the heel of
the hand that makes the knife an extension of the arm. The tang is
fully tapered and fileworked with an bold and well-defined geometric
pattern for increased purchase and handmade signature.
- Balance and Feel:
The center of balance of the knife is just in front of the
finger ring forefinger position, making the handle feel light
and the blade strong and massive. The knife feels
extremely solid and durable in forward grip, blade leading. In reverse grip,
with the small finger threaded through the ring and the thumb over
the heel with the tip across the rear bolster, the knife feels robust and
tough. The unique handle shape,
balance, thickness, and stout design of this knife makes it an
incredible tool and weapon. This is, clearly, one the very best
tactical, counterterrorism, and utility knives made in the world today.
Included:
The Sheaths
This knife has two sheaths, one in heavy leather, one in tactical combat, tab-locking.
1. The Post-Lock Leather Sheath
- Weight: 8.7 oz. (247 grams)
- Materials: Heavy 10 oz. thick leather shoulder, stainless steel reinforcement screws
and marine-grade snaps, hand-stamped, black lacquered, nylon stitching
- Storage: double-layered canvas duck embroidered drawstring bag
in cotton duck canvas, polyester
- Description: I've designed and made a heavy,
tough, and solid leather sheath for the Kairos, in 10 oz.
leather shoulder, hand-stamped and tooled. This sheath is designed
for the most secure arrangement possible using leather, my
"Post-Lock." This is done by securing the knife around the handle
belly with a "post" of leather reinforced by two
stainless steel dot snap on the inside of the sheath. The retention
is double-strengthened by a second stainless steel dot snap in the
back of the sheath. Both snaps have to be opened and the sheath
front folded away from the handle to clear the post before the knife
can be removed. This makes the sheath the most reliable retention
method available in any leather knife sheath made.
The sheath leather is heavy shoulder,
from mature cows, and is twice as thick as most other knifemakers
use. The sheath mouth at its thickest is reinforced with stainless
steel Chicago screws. The stamp-tooling is "axe-head" black
basketweave, breaking up the light and reflection. The sheath is also
useful for traditional conservative and conventional wear options. The sheath has a
belt loop that can accommodate a 1.75" (4.5 cm) wide belt. The belt
loop is triple-row stitched, and the main sheath welts are
double-row stitched with tough nylon thread that is
water and sunlight resistant. The knife fits deep and secure into
the sheath, with none of the the handle exposed and the high back of the sheath
protecting the wearer. The sheath edges are dressed and smoothed for
comfort; the sheath is sealed with lacquer for water
resistance, permanence, and longevity. Leather is irreplaceable in
extremely cold or hot environments, and where absolute silence is
needed in tactical operations with no noise when rubbing
against objects, people, or gear. The leather sheath is also great
for a "non-tactical" outdoors look in a more casual setting when a
knife simply needs to be a tool.
2. The Hybrid Tension Tab Lock Tactical Sheath
