"Vindicator" with Lapis Lazuli Gemstone handle |
This was an unusual endeavor into bowie-land, and I made it many years ago (in the last century!) and the knife is displayed here in a "day of the dead" type of setting. Based on my Southern bowie pattern, the blade I made in 440C high chromium stainless steel. I hand-engraved a vertical sliced scene of the Mohave desert. I selectively electroplated 24 kt. gold over some of the creatures, not easy to do in 440C, which is resistant to all types of plating. I made the guard, pommel, and spacers of brass, and hand-engraved them. The handle is starburst jasper gemstone from Mexico, and the stand I made from Ocotillo cactus skeleton inlaid with genuine turquoise gemstone and stand caps of starburst jasper. The base is red oak with an etched steel nameplate. The display was temporary and not a permanent part of the artwork, with carved rosewood skulls and miniature mums and zinnias for that bright Day of the Dead holiday appeal, long before the style was popularized in the United States! A nice older work to visit.
