Handle: Polished Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper Gemstone
Sheath: Hand-carved Leather inlaid with Burgundy Ostrich Leg Skin
Knife: The Nekkar is one of the smallest fixed
blade knives I make, and is named for a yellow star in the
constellation The Herdsman. Though it is a small knife, this one
has big character. The blade is cleanly hollow ground and mirror
polished 440C high chromium martensitic stainless tool steel for the
highest corrosion resistance, high hardness, and high toughness
combination that only 440C can deliver. The edge is razor keen and
single bevel, with a very clean and polished spine and tapered tang.
The knife is bolstered with zero care 304 high chromium, high nickel
austenitic stainless steel and I hand-engraved the bolsters with a
light ribbon design, terminating in scrolls reflecting the orbs in
the gemstone. The dovetailed bolsters bed a pair of bright orange,
yellow, and red Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper gemstone scales. This
gemstone is both hard and tough, and I finished it to a bright,
glassy polish that is comfortable and smooth. This lightweight knife
is feathery and small in the hand, but hard and razor keen, just
right for paring, utility, or collection.
Sheath: The sheath for this gem is classy and
simple. I made it from 9-10 oz. leather shoulder, dyed black cherry,
and inlaid large, full panels, front, back, and in the belt loop of
burgundy Ostrich Leg Skin. This tough and glassy skin is exotic and
smooth, with shiny scales in rich dark red. The sheath is
hand-stitched with polyester sinew, lacquered and sealed. It
protects the knife and handle, yet allows enough of the rear quillon
to unsheathe the knife easily.
A beautiful small knife, suitable for carry, yet beautiful enough for display and investment.
