Knife: The Perseus is named for the
constellation in the northern sky, named for the ancient Greek hero.
This is a great small knife, and I enjoyed bringing it into form. I
made the blade of high chromium, high carbon 440C martensitic
stainless steel for extremely high corrosion resistance and I
hardened and tempered it to 60 Rockwell on the C scale for very high
wear resistance, and polished it to a bright mirror finish. I could do this because the grind I
accomplished with a small contact wheel, and the result of this is a
thin, tough cutting edge with a thick and strong spine. This is a
very useful knife blade style, a dropped point, making it easy to
sheath and use. Perseus is a tough knife, even though its outward appearance
is elaborate. I fileworked the spine completely, around the fully
tapered tang, with a staccato pattern I call "sunrise." The knife is
bolstered with zero care high nickel, high chromium 304
stainless steel, into which I've hand-engraved a speedy chevron
interlaced pattern, bold and distinctive. The bolsters bed a pair of
beautiful blue lace agate gemstone handle scales. This is a very
hard agate from Namibia, and untreated only has a hint of bluish
white color. So I've specially treated the gemstone with a tinge of
blue dye to
bring out the most intense light blue. The color and tone is
permanent, and this is a very hard and durable gemstone, one of the
hardest I use. It has bands of translucent and transparent agate,
with noticeable depth and crystalline portions. It's brightly
polished to a glassy smoothness, and the knife feels light and
strong in the hand, with the balance point at the middle finger in a
forward grip. This is a tough, durable knife, and its light, airy
appearance is clean and flowing.
Sheath: I matched the engraved chevron pattern
in the bolsters in the hand-carving of the sheath. I didn't want the
sheath to overtake the knife, so I hand-dyed the carved patterns in
a dark blue, framed with black. The sheath is all 9-10 oz. leather
shoulder, hand-stitched with black polyester, and sealed for
longevity. Even the back and belt loop are hand-carved and the
sheath is deep and protective of the knife and wearer.
A flowing, airy handle of solid, hard, blue agate and a useable
drop point hollow ground blade of high hardness.
