"Secora" Fine Handmade Knife
  • Size: Length overall: 7.8" (19.8 cm), Blade Length: 3.7" (9.4 cm), Thickness: 0.157" (4.0 mm)
  • Weight: Knife: 6.1 oz. (173 grams) Sheath: 4.7 oz. (133 grams)
  • Blade: 440C high chromium martensitic stainless steel blade, T3 deep cryogenically treated with triple tempering to 57 HRC
  • Bolsters, Fittings: 304 Austenitic Stainless Steel, Mirror polished
  • Handle: Mookaite Jasper Gemstone (Australia)
  • Sheath: Hand-carved, hand-dyed Leather Shoulder inlaid with burgundy Ostrich Leg skin, Nylon Stitching
  • Knife: The name Secora means "one who helps" and is also the name of the client who helped with the pattern of this drop point knife. This is a great design of a medium to small-sized knife, a useful drop point that is compact, with a very thin and sharp point, with a comfortable working handle. The blade is fully fileworked with a simple vine design for handmade distinction and improved grip.
    • The steel I chose for this knife is Food Contact Safe 440C high chromium martensitic stainless steel, my most requested steel for a reason. When properly treated, it's a dependable, reliable workhorse of extremely high corrosion resistance, good toughness and high wear resistance. The high chromium of 440C along with the high carbon and moderate molybdenum results in profuse chromium carbides, increasing corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance. To bring this steel to its zenith, I used my proprietary T3 deep cryogenic process in heat treating this blade; it's a highly detailed, extremely sophisticated process that takes 33 individual steps and takes over a week long. The result of this is an incredibly wear-resistant blade that has extremely high carbide development, fine grain, and extremely high corrosion resistance. Asperity is reduced; the microstructure development is superior to any other typical handmade knife, and far above any factory or manufactured knife. This is, simply put, 440C at its very finest advanced condition. I tempered the knife to 57 HRC to add increased toughness for the thin point. The grind for this knife blade is hollow, leaving a strong spine with a very thin cutting edge. The point is extremely thin, at 0.012" thickness behind the point, about the thickness of four sheets of paper! This is a point for extremely fine and accurate work and a single bevel edge. I fileworked the knife completely around the tapered tang with a simple vine pattern for handmade flair and reduced slipping along the spine. The thickness of the spine encourages pressure with the thumb in tough cutting use, yet the tip is incredibly thin and sharp.
    • I bolstered the knife with large, zero-care 304 high chromium, high nickel stainless steel bolsters, which are contoured, rounded and finished for a comfortable feel. The bolsters are secured with zero-clearance peened pins and dovetailed to bed the handle scales. The rear bolsters are wide and support the rear quillon that locks the handle into the hand.
    • The handle scales of this knife are warm and beautiful Mookaite Jasper gemstone from Australia. This is a silicified porcelanite, a a Lower Cretaceous sedimentary unit that outcrops over much of the Carnarvon Basin in Western Australia. This mookaite has a low luster, a warm and "soft" appearance and is a very tough, durable stone. The pattern is bold and large, and the gemstone requires zero care.
    • The knife feels light and workable in the hand. The thin tip is just right for extremely fine work, and the handle shape feels great with the front and rear quillons and good belly. The handle accommodates four fingers if you are thin, and if you have large hands, like me, it's a great three-fingered hold. This knife is food-contact safe.
  • Sheath: To match the bold pattern in the stone, I chose to inlay the 9-10 oz. leather shoulder with 9 burgundy panels of Ostrich Leg skin. These have natural waves and wrinkles, and I oriented them to work with the bold design arrangement. The inlays are on the front and back and in the belt loop. The sheath is dyed a light tan color, and stitched with chestnut nylon. This is a deep sheath, with a high back, to protect the knife and the wearer from the cutting edge and fine tip of the blade. while allowing a low wear position on the belt. The rear finger quillon helps pull the knife from the sheath and the drop point makes sheathing easy and fast. The thick, hard sheath is sealed in a thick coating of lacquer for longevity.
  • A handsome, thin, fine-edged knife with warm colors and working style.

Thanks, R. N.!
